Jobs are booked in to the walk-up kiosk system by the user. These jobs are booked into a database and placed in a queue. If you consider your job urgent please give a brief explanation of why as we can identify your job as priority. The database is used by the Electronics Section to manage and update all jobs.
This system is designed so users can view all past and present jobs. It allows users to track current jobs and the status of that job by the unique booking reference number given.
For complete jobs the client panel also allows the customer to see information such as jobs resolution, price, location of equipment, etc defined by the technicians within the section.
The client panel allows user to contact the Electronics Section by completing the comments box on any of their jobs, this will notify the electronics staff who will be able to respond faster than email. These comments will stay permanently within the job specified which then allows additional staff to come into the job at a later date and have all available correspondence between the electronic section and the client available.
Sometimes when a job is booked in by a customer the job maybe related to another person. In this case the person who is related to the job but did not book in the job, can be added to job as a "related user".
This gives the "related user" the ability to see the job when they login to the client panel. It also then allows the "related user" to add and read comments for that job. If required multiple people can be added as a related user for a job.
To take advantage of this feature first book in your job, and then add a comment requesting the addition of a related user and a brief explanation of why, please remember to supply their username.
Due to the number of jobs the Electronics Section has in the queue at any one time it is crucial that all jobs are booked into the system as soon as possible.
To book a job in the customer must locate one of the "Walk up" kiosk systems.
Once at the walk up system the customer must follow the on screen steps to book in their job. The video to the right shows an example of job being booked in.
After the job is booked in a label will be printed off, please ensure you stick this on your item for repair. If you have multiple items the walk up system can print additional labels. If an item arrives at the workshop with no label it will be returned in its current state. The customer will receive two emails one confirming it has been booked in and a final one when repaired instructing them where to collect their item.
For jobs booked in from the chemistry kiosk walk up system the item/s for repair can be left within Chemistry Stores for delivery to the PSI workshop. Jobs booked in at Physics will have to be delivered directly to our workshop after being booked in.
All users external to the university must speak to a member of the Electronics Section prior to booking the job into the system.
The Electronic Section provides Electronic design and construction, Repair, research IT services to teaching, research and PSS; we do not charge for time, but we do charge for parts and consumables used. Types of repair of equipment range from hotplates to x-ray machines. Please be aware the Electronic Section is not a stock room and do not provide parts off hand, be it LEDs or resistors
Design of new equipment for research and teaching can be done from user specifications or circuit diagrams provided by the customer or the Electronic Section can work with the user to generate specifications.
We will attempt to repair most types of equipment depending on its value and the time to repair. See "How do I book a job?". For repair of capital equipment such as x-ray machines etc ensure you request a personal visit when booking the job in .
When equipment can't be bought or is too expensive we can design and build equipment to specifications. For design and construction projects it is best if the client talks personally to the Electronics Sections about what they require before booking the job.
Once the job is booked in meetings will take place to create a basic specification of what is required. After the Electronics Section understands the user requirements a design will be produced and constructed. The Electronics Section may work in conjunction with the mechanical workshop for designs that require mechanical construction and we will do the mechanical drawings.
Some skills that we possess in the Electronics Section are listed below to give an idea of what we can help with:
Below are examples of past jobs we have designed and repaired. Including skills such as R&D, electronics design and 3d design / mechanical.
